German firm to buy two idled U.S. Steel plants

A German company is buying two idled Hamilton steel plants in a deal that could mean 300 new jobs for the city.
The sale of the No. 1 bar mill and No. 3 bloom and billet mill at U. S. Steel Canada’s Burlington Street complex will mark the North American debut of Max Aicher Group, a German company that already commands more than 20 per cent of Europe’s market for automotive steel.
The mills have been inactive since January 2009, when U.S. Steel idled almost all of its Canadian operations in the face of plunging demand, moving production of flat-rolled steel to the United States.
Max Aicher (North America) Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Max Aicher GmbH & Co. KG of Germany.
Based in Freilassing, Germany, east of Munich, the company has interests in real estate, construction, steel and waste recycling. It entered the steel business in Germany in 1975, rehabilitating the bankrupt Stahlwerk Annahutte mill in the town of Berchtesgaden. It now operates several stainless steel and rolling mills in Germany, Czech Republic, Romania and Hungary serving customers in auto production and construction.
Aicher employs about 2,500 people in steel production now.

E.ON sells US subsidiary to PPL for $7.6 billion

The biggest German power company, E.ON, early Thursday announced the sale of its US subsidiary for about 7.6 billion dollars (5.75 billion euros) to American energy supplier PPL in order to boost its cash reserves. In a statement, the group said it considered the price “very attractive”, adding that the transaction was conditional on approval by the US competition authorities.
E.ON US includes two electricity and gas suppliers in the southern state of Kentucky, Louisville Gas and Electric Company (LG&E) and Kentucky Utilities Company (KU), which employ a total of more than 3,000 people and supply more than 1.2 million clients.
The sale of one of its smallest subsidiaries will enable E.ON, in debt to the tune of more than 45 billion euros, to achieve its objective of making savings of 10 billion euros by the end of 2010.
PPL, based in Allentown, Pennsylvania, controls 12,000 mw of capacity in the United States, sells energy on the main American markets and supplies electricity to four million customers in the US and Britain.

American companies see opportunities in Eastern Germany

Germany is the top business location for American companies in Europe, according to a recent survey conducted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany (AmCham).
Germany enjoys an excellent reputation as Europe’s largest market with unwavering demand throughout the downturn. In Eastern Germany, the US is the number one country of origin for foreign direct investment due to the region’s growth potential, stable investment environment and concentration of high-tech industries.
Dr. Thomas de Maiziere, German Federal Minister of the Interior and Federal Government Commissioner for the New Federal States, presented key opportunities in Eastern Germany to American companies at a Germany Trade & Invest event in Washington, DC, on April 29th.

American business interest in Germany remains high. In the annual AmCham Business Barometer, 80 percent of those surveyed even named Germany as their future focal point for investments in Europe.

First German Offshore Wind Farm Opens

Alpha Ventus

Alpha Ventus

On Tuesday, April 27, 2010, Germany’s first offshore wind farm, alpha ventus, was opened by Federal Environment Minister Dr. Norbert Röttgen and the CEOs of energy companies EWE AG, E.ON and Vattenfall. Alpha ventus is situated about 28 miles off the German coast.

Twelve 5 megawatt wind turbines have been built on an area of about 1.5 square miles. Situated far from the coast, they stand in approximately 98 feet of water. Each one is capable of generating enough electricity to supply 4,100 households, making this the world’s first system of this magnitude. Planning for this project started in 1999. The first underwater cables were laid in 2007, the first wind turbine was installed in July 2008, and in 2009, work started on building the platform.

Germany already generates 16.1 percent of its electricity by renewable energies. This means Germany is well on track to achieving its ambitious targets of 30 percent electricity generated by renewables, and 40 percent less greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.

NYC’s Cooper Union Academy is a LEED Platinum Building

Organized chaos gets robots going

Cooper Union

Cooper Union

Cooper Union reports that the new academic building will be the first “green” academic laboratory building in New York City, built to Platinum LEED standards. The entire edifice is designed for sustainability, energy efficiency and air quality.
Here are some highlights:
– State-of-the-art radiant heating and cooling technology-the first used in the U.S.-will conserve energy and increase efficiency.
– An outer layer of semi-transparent mesh screen will create coolness in the summer and warmth in the winter by controlling daylight, energy use and natural ventilation.
– Carbon dioxide detectors throughout the building will automatically dim power and ventilation when rooms are unoccupied-saving on energy and costs.
– A co-generation system will produce some power for both the new building and the Foundation building, reducing the need to tap into the outside electrical grid.
– The deck surface of the green roof will be covered by a layer of low-maintenance plantings, which help to reduce city “heat island” effects, stormwater runoff, noise, summer air conditioning cost and winter heat demand.
– Together with the low-flow plumbing devices, the green roof will save more than 600,000 gallons of water annually.
These and other green features will contribute to the building’s value as a “learning laboratory” as students focus on the world’s growing demands for sustainable development, energy reduction and conservation of natural resources.
