Although the home building sector is struggling green homes are booming in the US.
The Energy Star designation awarded to homes that are at least 20 % more energy-efficient crossed the 1 million mark the first time since the program started in 1995. In 2009 nearly 17 % of all single family homes built were Energy Star homes, up from 12 % in 2007.
In addition other private programs that certify homes as environmental friendly reported growth in 2009, while new homes started or completed in 2009 plunged by 30%.
There is also an increasing interest going green with existing homes. More people are doing it to save money on their heating bills,” says Kevin Morrow of the National Association of Home Builders, whose green certifications jumped from 99 homes in 2008 to at least 564 in 2009.
