In 1976, long before the green movement, Heinz Hess was a naturalist, a man who ardently believed that pure was better, organic was healthier, that man and nature should exist in harmony. When his son was born Heinz Hess created organic clothing for his newborn and started his own clothing company, hessnatur.
Demand for hessnatur apparel led Hess to initiate organic cotton farming projects in Egypt, Peru, Senegal, Turkey and Burkina Faso. Hessnatur is now a model of responsible enterprise, paying 40% more than they could for their cotton, and teaching farmers and their families to read and write. Hess Natur developed an innovative system for control and inspection that ensures humane production in 2002 and was the first German company to be certified by the FairWear organization in 2005. Recently Hessnatur brought the dream of Heinz Hess to America and is located in Margate, Florida.
