Cell phones could double as night vision devices
Call it Nitelite: The newest app for cell phones might be night vision.

A University of Florida engineering researcher has crafted a nickel-sized imaging device that uses organic light-emitting diode technology similar to that found in cell phone or laptop screens for night vision. But unlike night vision goggles, which are heavy and expensive, the device is paper-thin, light and inexpensive, making it a possible add-on to cell phone cameras, even eyeglasses, once it is enlarged.

Sunlight with cooling factor

Although it sounds like a contradiction in terms, using the power of the sun for refrigeration is proving to be an original energy concept. In Tunisia and Morocco, Fraunhofer research scientists are using solar energy to keep perishable foodstuffs such as milk, wine and fruit fresh.

»Refrigerated by sunlight« – we could well see an ecostatement like this printed on food packaging in the years ahead. Solar energy is already being used to power air-conditioning systems in buildings, but now researchers also want to refrigerate fruit and other perishable foodstuffs using energy from the sun.

Scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg are demonstrating that this is feasible in the Mediterranean region using the examples of a winery in Tunisia and a dairy in Morocco. In the MEDISCO project (short for MEDiterranean food and agro Industry applications of Solar COoling technologies) solar plants for refrigerating milk and wine have been installed in cooperation with universities, energy agencies and European companies. The project funded by the European Commission is run by the Polytechnic University of Milan.

German firm consolidates Georgia operations

Hettich America L.P., a German manufacturer of hardware for kitchen cabinets and furniture, is consolidating existing Georgia operations into a larger facility in Gwinnett County.
The 150,000-square-foot building in Buford will house manufacturing, sales, research and development, and engineering. Those functions will be moved out of two locations totaling 120,000 square feet in Baldwin and Alpharetta.
With the move, Hettich is banking on growth that will create 50 new jobs in the next few years, according to a Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce news release.
Hettich produces slides drawer systems, hinges, slides and other hardware. The Gwinnett location will be the company’s only U.S. presence.
The U.S. branch is a subsidiary of the Hettich Group, which is headquartered in Kirchlengern, Germany. The company employs 5,500 people worldwide and has customers in more than 100 countries.

In February 2010 compared with January 2010, the euro area1 (EA16) industrial new orders index2 rose by 1.5%. In January 20103 the index fell by 1.6%. In the EU271 new orders increased by 1.1% in February 2010, after a rise of 0.3% in January 20103. Excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment4, for which changes tend to be more volatile, industrial new orders rose by 2.5% in the euro area and by 1.9% in the EU27.
In February 2010 compared with February 2009, industrial new orders increased by 12.2% in the euro area and by 12.7% in the EU27. Total industry excluding ships, railway & aerospace equipment4 rose by 14.0% in the euro area and by 13.5% in the EU27.

These estimates are released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

Haus mit essbaren Wänden nutzt Sonne, Wind und Regen

Studenten der University of Maryland haben ein außergewöhnliches Öko-Haus konzipiert, das beim Solar Decathlon 2011 in der National Mall präsentiert wird. Zielvorgabe des vom US-Energieministerium ins Leben gerufenen Solar Decathlon ist es, solarbetriebene energieeffiziente Gebäude, die finanziell leistbar sind und ein attraktives Design haben, in der Öffentlichkeit zu präsentieren. Forscherteams sind aufgefordert, ihre Ideen einzubringen.

Insgesamt werden 20 Teams an dem Wettbewerb teilnehmen. Sie kommen aus verschiedenen Ländern – darunter auch aus Belgien, China und Neuseeland. Der Gewinner wird jenes Team sein, das die Zielvorgaben am besten erfüllt. Das Maryland-Team, das bereits 2007 mit dem LEAFHouse den zweiten Preis erreichen konnte, präsentiert diesmal das WaterShed Gebäude, in dem es unter anderem essbare Wände gibt.

Haus als Mini-Ökosystem
“Das WaterShed-Gebäude beginnt dort, wo wir mit dem LEAFHouse aufgehört haben”, so Amy Gardner, Professorin für Architektur und Leiterin des Solar-Decathlon-Teams der University of Maryland. WaterShed stellt ein Mini-Ökosystem dar, das die Sonnen- und Windenergie sowie das Regenwasser und Haushaltsabfälle nützt. Das zweigeteilte Gebäude besteht aus zwei viereckigen Einheiten, die mit einem Schmetterlingsdach, das Sonnen und Regenwasser effizient einfängt, ausgestattet ist.

Im Jahr 2009 investierten Familien mehr in Solarenergie in Deutschland als E.ON, EnBW, RWE und Vattenfall zusammen in Kraftwerksneu und -ausbau.

Die Energieversorgung in Deutschland wird zunehmend zur Familienangelegenheit: Bundesbürger investierten im letzten Jahr über sechs Milliarden Euro allein in die Solarenergie. Das ist mehr, als die vier großen Energieversorger zusammen für Kraftwerksneu und -ausbau ausgegeben haben. 73 Prozent der Hauseigentümer in Deutschland wollen ihre Energie am liebsten selbst erzeugen, so eine heute zum Auftakt der Woche der Sonne veröffentlichte Forsa-Umfrage.
