In October we immersed our self deeply into wind, solar and alternative energy as well as green and sustainable building techniques at the Solar Decathlon, a solar house competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy at the Mall of Washington, D.C..
In addition we thoroughly enjoyed a daylong and enlightening Solar Symposium and workshop at the German Embassy in Washington, D.C. during the Solar Decathlon entitled: “Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Building in Germany and the USA.” and met with German and American experts in the field of alternative energies.
We discussed many current issues in alternative energy and helped to celebrate the winner of the 2009 Solar Decathlon, the German group of students from ‘Technische Universität Darmstadt’ during the evening reception at the Goethe Institute in Washington, D.C.
Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Building in Germany and the USA

Returning from a business trip to Switzerland we took the route back via Washington, D.C. for pleasant and informative meetings with the new German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and other German political leaders.
With updated and broadened information, as well as deepened & strengthened business and political connections we returned to our office.

Creativity World Forum in Germany

The Creativity World Forum 2009 will be held in Germany in the southern state of Baden-Württemberg, for the first time . It will have an interdisciplinary, international character that seeks to surpass traditionally defined spheres and encourage more lateral thinking. The event also plans to invigorate cooperation between creative industries in different countries. It will take place from 12/1/2009 – 12/3/2009 in Ludwigsburg, Germany.

Epigenomics AG: First Blood Test for Colorectal Cancer Available in Germany

Epigenomics AG, a molecular diagnostics company focusing on the development and commercialization of in vitro diagnostic products for cancer, today announced that several German laboratories will start offering laboratory-developed colorectal cancer blood tests based on Epigenomics’ proprietary biomarker mSEPT9 on October 1st, 2009.

A blood test for colorectal cancer early detection that is easily integrated into an annual health check-up and does not require patient involvement is believed to be more acceptable to doctors and patients and has the potential to greatly increase the effectiveness of national screening programs. If tested positive in such an easy to use blood test, patients would be referred to a gastroenterologist for colonoscopy to confirm the diagnosis and initiate early treatment.

Epigenomics is a molecular diagnostics company with a focus on the development of novel products for cancer. Using DNA methylation biomarkers, Epigenomics’ tests in development aim at diagnosing cancer at an early stage before symptoms occur and thereby may reduce mortality from this dreaded disease.
The company is headquartered in Berlin, Germany, and has a wholly owned subsidiary in Seattle, WA, U.S.A.

Pittsburgh Energy and Environment Week Brings Together Stakeholders From North America and Europe

In April 2010, the Energy & Environment Week trade show in Pittsburgh will bring together German and European companies with American companies in the fields of bioenergy, waste and recycling, alternative vehicle fuels, and energy efficiency.
EEW means five days of site tours, conference sessions, interactive workshops and exhibits. The focus is on energy and materials recovery from waste and biomass, the commercialization of hydrogen and fuel cells, and the potential of energy efficiency technologies for climate protection and cost cutting. One highlight of the event is the alternative fuel vehicle ride and drive. EEW co-locates with two established events, “Energy from Biomass and Waste” and “Hydrogen Expo”, both of which have become leading industry gatherings.
Freesen & Partner GmbH is a specialist in trade show marketing and the conference’s main organizer.
More than 150 exhibitors and 2,000 delegates are expected to attend EEW 2010. Exhibiting companies can contribute to the conference program with a presentation on their technologies and projects.
The EEW will be held at the Pittsburgh’s David L. Lawrence Convention Center. It is the first convention center to receive Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the US Green Building Council.

Nordex celebrates groundbreaking for wind turbine plant

Nordex USA, Inc., a leading manufacturer of utility-scale wind turbines, today held a groundbreaking celebration at the construction site of its $100 million manufacturing facility in Jonesboro, Arkansas. At the event, management presented its vision for a renewable energy future, as well as details on plans to hire 700 people by 2014.

The first phase of construction began at the 187-acre site in Craighead Technology Park in late July. Production is scheduled to begin in mid 2010. The Jonesboro operation will be an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) producing one of the largest classes of wind turbines in the world, the 2.5 megawatt N90 and N100. Each of these utility-scale turbines is capable of generating enough renewable energy to power about 700 American homes.
Nordex is already seeing a pick up in the market. It recently completed the 62.5 megawatt “Highland” wind farm in Pennsylvania and is working on further projects.

Nordex is one of the fastest growing wind turbine producers, operating in 18 countries and employing 2,200 people. The company’s global headquarters is in Hamburg, Germany Nordex AG attributes much of its profit growth to the US market.The US accounted for 12 percent of the company’s global sales, up from roughly one percent in the previous year.

Ikea Billy Bookshelf Index Shows Lowest Price in U.A.E.

Following a Bloomberg list about the prices of IKEA’s standard Billy bookshelf the shelf is most expensive in Israel ILS395 ($103.48) and the cheapest in the United Arab Emirates with a price of AED175 ($47.64). The table lists the price of the bookshelf in 38 countries according to the figures published on IKEA’s website.

A giant kite floating high above the boat provides the propulsion, if the winds are favorable, to keep the ship moving, while saving up to 35% in fuel costs.
Designed for cargo ships, the parachute-like sail produces about four times as much energy as that on a regular sailing ship and, with winds of 8 m.p.h. (7 knots) or more, can be used to relieve the main engine.
The SkySails is lifted into the air with the help of a telescoping mast at the ship’s prow. An autopilot calculates wind force, direction, ship route, as well as speed and makes sure the sail is positioned in the most optimal way. In addition to cargo vessels, fish trawlers and superyachts can also be equipped with SkySails.

The German company SkySails was established and developed the world’s first practicable towing kite propulsion system for commercial shipping in 2001. A unique network of outside experts and powerful suppliers from the shipbuilding and aircraft industries, together with suppliers from the superyacht sector, has contributed to the development of the SkySails system.

The German company adidas to become a Tier One partner of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
German sports goods manufacturer adidas will be the exclusive supplier of branded and unbranded sports merchandise to all London 2012 venues and stores plus they will also kit out the approximately 70,000 volunteers needed to man the Games and will provide them with the same level of care as athletes.
