Nordex celebrates groundbreaking for wind turbine plant

Nordex USA, Inc., a leading manufacturer of utility-scale wind turbines, today held a groundbreaking celebration at the construction site of its $100 million manufacturing facility in Jonesboro, Arkansas. At the event, management presented its vision for a renewable energy future, as well as details on plans to hire 700 people by 2014.

The first phase of construction began at the 187-acre site in Craighead Technology Park in late July. Production is scheduled to begin in mid 2010. The Jonesboro operation will be an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) producing one of the largest classes of wind turbines in the world, the 2.5 megawatt N90 and N100. Each of these utility-scale turbines is capable of generating enough renewable energy to power about 700 American homes.
Nordex is already seeing a pick up in the market. It recently completed the 62.5 megawatt “Highland” wind farm in Pennsylvania and is working on further projects.

Nordex is one of the fastest growing wind turbine producers, operating in 18 countries and employing 2,200 people. The company’s global headquarters is in Hamburg, Germany Nordex AG attributes much of its profit growth to the US market.The US accounted for 12 percent of the company’s global sales, up from roughly one percent in the previous year.

Ikea Billy Bookshelf Index Shows Lowest Price in U.A.E.

Following a Bloomberg list about the prices of IKEA’s standard Billy bookshelf the shelf is most expensive in Israel ILS395 ($103.48) and the cheapest in the United Arab Emirates with a price of AED175 ($47.64). The table lists the price of the bookshelf in 38 countries according to the figures published on IKEA’s website.

A giant kite floating high above the boat provides the propulsion, if the winds are favorable, to keep the ship moving, while saving up to 35% in fuel costs.
Designed for cargo ships, the parachute-like sail produces about four times as much energy as that on a regular sailing ship and, with winds of 8 m.p.h. (7 knots) or more, can be used to relieve the main engine.
The SkySails is lifted into the air with the help of a telescoping mast at the ship’s prow. An autopilot calculates wind force, direction, ship route, as well as speed and makes sure the sail is positioned in the most optimal way. In addition to cargo vessels, fish trawlers and superyachts can also be equipped with SkySails.

The German company SkySails was established and developed the world’s first practicable towing kite propulsion system for commercial shipping in 2001. A unique network of outside experts and powerful suppliers from the shipbuilding and aircraft industries, together with suppliers from the superyacht sector, has contributed to the development of the SkySails system.

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2009 took place in October on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
The Solar Decathlon is an educational project of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and organized by DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
The Solar Decathlon, supported by event and team sponsors from the private sector, is a competition in which teams of college and university students compete to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar powered house. The 2009 Solar Decathlon is the fourth competition; the inaugural event was held in 2002, the second in 2005, and the third in 2007.
Team Germany finished first in Solar Decathlon 2007, and the 2009 team has relied on members of the 2007 team for guidance.
The Solar Decathlon houses were open for public tours on 10/9 – 10/13/2009 and 10/15 – 10/18/2009 between 11 a.m. -3 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Please note that all houses are closed Wednesday, Oct. 14. 2009

NanoCut

With the new NanoCut technology developed by researchers at the Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) in Jena, Germany it is possible to drill holes only a millionth of a millimetre in diameter and thus may revolutionize gene therapy.

The NanoCut technology was developed by Wolfgang Fritzsche of the IPHT and Karten Koenig from the Saar-Universität, Germany. Their innovation already received the award ‘Research Highlight of the Year 2007′ by the British journal Nature Nanotechnology and has been praised by the industry journal ‘Nano Letters’.

Because the NanoCut procedure has succeeded in bundling the energy of a laser to the point of the size of individual human chromosomes, this new technology is most important to medicine and makes it possible to target specific areas of genetic material that carry a genetic defect and switch them off.

Fritzsche notes ‘We can mark the nanoparticles in such a way that they can be bound to a certain place on a chromosome. This would allow areas of genes that are carrying a genetic defect to be selected and then removed. Fritzsche’s method also has other advantages. He says ‘We can also work simultaneously and choose different places on the genes where we can attach the nanoparticles. Most importantly, the rest of the chromosome remains completely unchanged by the procedures.’
